Image: A small sand dune fungus , winter stalkball (Tulostoma brumale) that appears to have a symbiotic relationship with the dune moss Syntrichia ruralis ssp. ruraliformis. Paul designed a sand dune habitat as part of a translocation procedure for these two species at Attenborough Lakes SSSI. The situation is under monitoring.
Images: Clockwise from top left: Bryophilous fungus Bryostroma trichostomi on leaf of the moss Didymodon fallax, asci of fungus, cleistothecia on leaves of Syntrichia intermedia, single spore of fungus.
The
complex interactions between plants and fungi make it essential to
study them together
